One of the four main businesses of Şişecam Group, the Şişecam Chemicals Business produces soda and chromium chemicals, industrial raw materials, glass fiber, vitamin K3 derivatives, and sodium metabisulfite in 5countries and over 20 plants. In terms of soda production, the business is the fourth biggest in Europe and 10th in the world, in terms of sodium bichromate and basic chromium sulfate it is the world leader, while in terms of chromic acid production it is the fourth in the world.
The foundations of the Şişecam Chemicals Business was laid in 1969 with Soda Sanayii AŞ, founded for the production of soda, which constitutes one of the main raw materials of the glass industry. The chemicals produced at the Soda Plant in Mersin and Kromsan Krom Bileşikleri Plant, which joined the group in 1982, supply raw materials to over 100 sectors, from detergents to the chemical industry and from leather to pharmaceuticals.
The business made its first foreign investment in 1997 by acquiring the privatized Sodi soda plant in Bulgaria, which was joined in later years by Cromital-Italy, producer of chromium chemicals, and Lukavac Soda Plant-Bosnia-Herzegovina, producer of soda. Besides soda and chromium chemicals, the business produces glass fiber, industrial raw materials, vitamin K3 derivatives, and sodium metabisulfite.
The mining companies within the Chemicals Business supply the raw materials required by Şişecam Group plants producing glass, glass fiber, and soda. Camiş Madencilik AŞ is active in around 70 mining fields throughout the country with its 18 raw material preparation and enrichment facilities.
The Şişecam Chemicals Business continues its activities under the “Triple Commitment,” a voluntary initiative in the chemicals industry, complying with environmental, health, and work safety regulation systems. Soda Sanayii has set an international example with its investments in environmental health, and meets its own energy requirements with its Cogeneration Power Plant by producing approximately 1.9 billion kWh of electricity annually. The R&D Center in Mersin specializes in soda and chromium chemicals, and contributes to the competitive strength of the business with the new technologies and products it develops in accordance with environmental standards and market demand.
